As christians we try to define ourselves as people who have to obey and follow certain laws and requirements. While this may be true is not WHAT WE DO what define us as Christians.
I have been away for a while from the blog because as many of you know or have experienced, there are a lot of times when our faith and trust in God just fades away. We think that God has forsaken us and is just punishing us for whatever we think we did wrong.
In truth God doesn’t “punish” his children but instructs them. Think about how as parents we need to correct our children in order to help them live a complete and fulfilled life, knowing what is right and wrong. The same happens with our Heavenly Father. He teaches us through obstacles and storms and problems how to TRUST IN HIM COMPLETELY.
And this is where I want to go when talking about our identity as Christians, as Sons and Daughters o God.
We are coheirs of the Kingdom of God. We have received the most precious gift ever given:
True and eternal salvation plus the most amazing secret weapon: The Holy Spirit.
I have experienced first hand the power on the Holy Spirit loud in clear when I needed most. God has some awesome ways to make you understand, open your eyes and ears for what He plans for us so that we may understand or at the very least make peace with it.
I have been questioning God, upset at God for not delivering quickly what I desired for my life. I have been “hanging around”, doubting if God truly hears me, if he really cares about me. I have cried also when I realized how selfish and blinded I became when my NEEDS WEREN’T FULFILLED TO A “T”. I have -by the mercy of God- understood that God didn’t leave me alone or didn’t care enough to give what I wanted.
By the power of the Holy Spirit I have understood in my heart, deep in my soul, that I have been blessed time and time again; That my life and all that revolves around it is been held by the loving hand of my Heavenly Father. I have never had a day without food or a place to sleep. I know that even when present situations seem so negative God is there taking care of Us. And I can feel his love, because you see, the Holy Spirit that lives in all us -children of God- gives you this indescribable something that stirs up from the inside out. You can feel it when you read the Word of God and you can clearly hear God’s voice talking to you, encouraging you, hugging you… When you hear a sermon and is exactly what you needed to hear and your heart dwells in its words and wakes you up from a time of desperation and despair.
Our identity as children of God is made up of 3 basic points:
1. We were born again when accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. WE ARE CHILDREN.
2. We are sons and daughters of a King that isn’t from here. WE ARE TRAVELERS IN A FOREIGN LAND.
3. We are running a marathon to reach the greatest prize. WE ARE ATHLETES.
We cannot think for a moment that what define us as children of God is what we do. Nothing that we do or say is worthy of such a prize. The only important thing is to recognize who we become in Christ. It doesn’t matter that we think that we are following God’s commands and laws, because no one, no one can do that. It’s our nature. We are not perfect. God knows this.
On the other hand, because God knows our inherent sinful nature he doesn’t expect us to to what’s right. (This doesn’t mean that we are free to do as we please…) He expect us to KNOW WHO WE ARE KNOW. He want us to recognize who we are now. Sons and daughters of the King of Kings. How does a prince or princess behave when knowing that all is at their disposition? Don’t they act with a certain demeanor and grace and respect. They now they have their father support and that they are taking care of.
We are royalty, we are precious, we have a new family name In CHRIST.
14 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name. 16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
Ephesians 3:14-19
And as I said that we are children of God, what do you think children do? They do nothing. They play, learn new things, explore and completely depend on their parents.
The same is true as Children of God: We must depend COMPLETELY of God. We should go out and play and explore by reading the Word of God. To learn what our Father has in store for us, to learn how to live our life.
Our Heavenly Father is not from this world. We are not from this world. We are here to learn and explore to become dependents of God. We are trekkers. Foreigners. Let’s act like it. Let’s act like we are on a voyage, just passing by, making a rest stop to get to our final destination. Our Home.
If we continue making this world our comfy home with all desires and splurges, we are not trusting in God but in our abilities to attain things. We are trusting in our sense of security to provide for all that we may need and more. If we get comfortable in a place that isn’t our home, how hard can it be to leave it? Do you think you will easily leave everything behind to follow Christ? Would it be too hard to leave the commodities that our hard earned money has bought for us? Have we thought about how many people around the world don’t even think about 90% of what we think is important?
We have to start making a life choice to follow Christ by living a life like Christ. Jesus is king and became man and came to earth to show us that it can be done. If the King of all the earth and all that has been created depended in God completely how much more we have to do the same.
11 Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. 12 Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us. 1 Peter 2:11-12
What we think is important today, it may not be tomorrow. It may even be gone. But God is not perishable, doesn’t expire: He is Infinite, Everlasting and Almighty.
And to really follow through with this task that seems like a race against time – wait a minute: IT’S A RACE AGAINT TIME!- we should be like super athletes.
What do athletes do: They train hard, day and night, non stop, and do whatever it takes to achieve their goals. They don’t give up, they push through, THEY ENDURE AND CONQUER.
24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. 25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 1 Corinthians 9: 24-25
Let’s all be part of Jesus’s dream team and train like there is no tomorrow. Reading the Word, filling ourselves with its knowledge and wisdom, to endure and conquer through difficult situations and GO FOR THE GOLD!
I want the Gold medal. I want to know more about Jesus and how to become more in love with Him, more dependent on Him, more in tune with Him. I adore Jesus because He is the only worthy of adoration. There is no other name in heaven or earth that has the power that Jesus, our Savior has.
Let us embrace our new identity: WE ARE CHILDREN OF GOD TRAVELING TO REACH THE MOST COVETED PRIZE, THROUGH PERSEVERANCE AND TRUST IN OUR SAVIOR: JESUS.
Love our Father with all our heart, and with all our strength and with all of our mind, Trust completely that He can do all good things for his children and that We don’t belong to the world, so we don’t trust in the world but in God, that we are passing through, so as not to make permanent houses but travel light with the wisdom that only the Word of God can give.
I pray that you and I can truly believe and understand who we are after we are born again. I pray that You and I can give praise to God everyday for our lives, for our bread, for our work, for our troubles and for the Holy Spirit, that is our secret weapon to fight against the forces that want to keep us slave to this world’s pleasures.
